THE FIRST PART OF THE day almost put Hero to sleep. He really didn’t care about writing essays or figuring out algebra or calculus or whatever math they were trying to shove down the students’ throats this year.

He was tempted to conveniently miss gym after their first break, thinking of faking an upset stomach or a migraine. But with Ann around, he didn’t feel right skipping. She was finally starting to trust him. And he really didn’t want her nagging him, either.

So he followed her and Reut to the bleachers outside, ignoring an insult from Gari and threatening glances from Samson.

“For today,” the coach started. “We will be training in teams of two. You are allowed to pick your partners. But be warned, waste this time and you’ll regret it tomorrow.”

Students watched as she stomped away, collectively sighing as she walked far away towards the field house. Once out of sight, girls flipped out their phones and boys their games.

“Time to relax!” Hero leaned back.

“Not for you,” Ann said, snatching his wrist and pulling him up.

“Hey!”

“We have to go train.”

“B-but–”

“No buts. You have one more day until the final, and you are not slacking off.”

“What about Reut?!”

Reut sat there, looking through his new collection of books, a goofy grin plastered on his face.

“He will be fine,” she said as she dragged him away.

He groaned but allowed her to lead him off the bleachers. Some of the boys glared at him, especially Gari. But he just soaked it in, grinning to himself. If they were going to hate him, why not for taking the attention of the most popular girl in school. He knew how much it killed them.

“Hero?”

“Huh?”

She let his wrist go, but kept walking. “I asked if you felt better. You seem to be walking just fine. But I am not sure . . .”

“Don’t worry. I’m good.”

“Alright.”

“Why so worried about me?” He leaned down and whispered into her ear. “Unless you like me?”

“Of course I like you,” she said, her voice completely unfazed. She stopped and turned to meet him. They were around the corner of the school, away from angry boys and annoying teachers.

“You do?”

“Yes. You are a nice boy, Hero. And I consider you a friend of sorts, too. If that is alright?”

“Oh. You mean that ‘like’.”

She tilted her head to the side. “What ‘like’ were you thinking of?”

He grinned. “The ‘like’ that leads to us kissing again.”

He didn’t see the bag until it collided with his face.

“Hey! That hurts!”

She sighed, sitting on the ground. “Focus on school, not kissing.”

He slumped down next to her. “Well, it was nice.”

“It was forced. And not really a kiss, considering how you just smashed your lips into mine.”

“Didn’t like it rough, huh?”

She smacked him again, this time with her hand. “Quit being so crude.”

“Okay! Okay! I won’t! Just quit hitting me!” He rubbed his cheek. “You’re so violent.”

“You seem to not respond to anything else.”

“Whatever. So are we not going to fight again?”

“No. This is a different type of training,” she said.
